Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

It's Supermom!

Animals are always surprising me. I have witnessed a lot of their antics in my life, and now I would like to tell you about some of the canine escape artists I have known, with the very best of them being the last one.

Houdini the First

Once upon a time there was a galgo, a male galgo. We were completely flabbergasted when the females in a particular paddock became pregnant one after the other without a logical explanation. It seemed a biological impossibility because the males living in the same paddock had all, without exception, been neutered. We even went so far as to physically separate the females from the males – to no avail. Had sperm been bewitched and was it flying through the air?! Then, one fine day, Houdini was not as quick as usual and we caught him in flagranti with his newest lady love. So that was the explanation! Houdini, who was at that time in quarantine, had been climbing over the door each night for an amorous liaison, only to return to his kennel before dawn. But even the greatest clandestine lover will eventually take one chance too many. The consequence for this Houdini was celibacy!

Houdini the Second

This female galgo – a Houdini in her own right – had suffered a broken leg, which was then stabilised with external fixations. It had been extremely difficult to rescue her in the first place, because she would not allow anyone to get close enough. The first thing I heard one day when arriving at Scooby was that she had escaped. I was very, very angry because I thought that someone had left the gate open. We finally managed to catch her, only to have exactly the same thing happen the following day. I was not angry then, I was absolutely furious! And I took everyone to task as we set out to catch her yet again. It took quite a while before we figured out what had been going on. In a secret, mad dash she would gain enough momentum to leap over the fence – which was over 2 metres high – without so much as touching it! Today, Madame Houdini lives in France where she is still jumping over any obstacle in her path. Of course, I later apologised to everybody.

Nana

Nana is a favourite with all the volunteers. She is Ahmed’s dog and I guess she has replaced our dear Loca. This incredible mixed-breed jumps over doors and fences. How does she do it? Well, she sticks her legs in the webbing and wiggles upwards with all her might. There is no way to keep her enclosed. But, then again, there is really no need. She is the happiest dog at Scooby, goes wherever she pleases, but never tries to escape the shelter.

Supermom

This is the most amazing story. We rescued Supermom and her five puppies last summer in a village near Segovia. She was very shy of us and protective of her young. She has only one puppy left now; the rest of them have been adopted and one has died. As you can see in the photo, mother and son do not look alike at all, but both of them are lovely dogs and both need a home as soon as possible.

Anyway, this dog is able to do the impossible: SHE CLIMBS THE WALLS! Yes, I know you cannot believe it. I could not either until I saw her performing this feat with my own eyes. Perhaps she wants to be with people. I really do not know whether she is Supermom or Spiderwoman in dog disguise, or a combination of the two, but I can swear that I am telling you the truth. ADOPT her and see for yourself!

With love,

Fermin
